Chapter 37 - Clive

In the Name of the Sphere

There were as many groans and looks of disgust as there were of hope, when Jurien informed his army of what had transpired in his conversation with Light.

The small army did well not to voice their opinions too openly as he explained that he would be accepting a bond with me. Though, he did have to field a few questions and he came up short a couple of times. Mainly around how we’d go about liberating Holse. He eventually turned to me to answer that question.

“To start with, I’m hoping that by us creating a Soulmate Bond, much of Holse will become allied and our Sphere will expand naturally. The north, however, that’s controlled by Hakan’s main shield, which is fed from his altar. That’s gonna be a bastard to deal with, but that’s why I’m here. I’ll open it up, you guys convert the folk in there, while I deal with his altar.”

“Then,” Jurien said slowly. “I suppose we better get to the bonding. Who knows how many more lives could be lost if we dally now.”

“What of those already bonded by Hakan?” Malinor asked. “Do you just intend to kill them?”

“I’ll put a shield over them that can cut bonds. Then you guys go in, reclaim the temples, drop Hakan’s shield and allow our Sphere to grow. I hope.”

Jurien’s expression shifted from impatience to worry. “You hope?”

“Yeah, Jurien. I don’t exactly do this kind of thing every day you know.”

The Champion shook his lank, golden-haired head. “‘I hope’ doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, Clive.”

“Good. Because this is dangerous as hell. We could all be killed tomorrow. We’re not doing this for shits and giggles. We’re doing this because it’s better than the alternative.

“Apologies,” he replied curtly. The faces of the soldiers had all faded to ashen at my mini rant. As well, they should.

I swallowed the bitter taste in my mouth and continued. “Shall we make this official, then?”

“We shall,” Jurien replied. “You will have to talk me through it.”

“I’ll just form it myself. When you feel a tug on your core, let yourself go with it.”

The worry was back on his face in an instant.

“Don’t start freaking out now, Jurien. If I wanted to slave bond you, I could have done it at any time. You want a demo?”

His eyes widened. “I’d rather not. It’s frightening how powerful you’ve become, Clive. I suppose we’re lucky that you’re decent, all things considered.”

“You definitely are.” Sania agreed with unnecessary ferocity. “Clive is powerful enough to subdue all of the gods and take control of the entire universe if not for Hakan. Yet even without Hakan he would not. He would rather relax and spend time with loved ones. If only your Goddess had listened.”

Jurien nodded but didn’t respond.

I waved a hand to brush away the tension. “Never mind all that. We all want the same thing right now, which is to survive. Jurien,” I said, making sure I had his full attention.
